The South Yorkshire parish of Rossington lies in the Doncaster Borough of the county. It is thought that Rossington dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, and there is certainly evidence of a Roman Fort nearby. The parish of Rossington includes New Rossington and Rossington Bridge, and it was in Rossington Bridge that a race took place in the early part of the 19th century. The meeting was initially staged on Wednesday 12th March 1834, although on this occasion there were so many fallers in the field of 5 that the race was declared void and rerun the next day. On Thursday 13th March the 4 mile course started in a field adjoining King’s Wood, near Bawtry, and proceeded to a fence at Partridge Hill, moving on to Poverty Hill and Finningley Lane before heading to the winning post in a field behind the Inn at Rossington Bridge. The race was won by Mr Willmott’s 6 year old bay horse Deceiver. There are no records of further races taking place in the parish. |
